Dear Future Mamaā€¦
Apr 19, 2024Dear Future Mama,
As pelvic health physical therapists, moms, and birth coaches, we believe that your pelvic health is incredibly important during pregnancy, postpartum, and throughout your lifespan. The pelvic floor muscles, which are a group of muscles that sit in the bottom of the pelvis, play a vital role in supporting your pelvic organs, maintaining continence, providing stability to your core and pelvis/hips, and sexual function.
During pregnancy, the weight and pressure of the growing baby can put increased strain on the pelvic floor muscles. This can lead to various pelvic health issues such as urinary and or fecal incontinence (leakage of urine or bowels), pelvic organ prolapse (when pelvic organs descend into the vaginal or rectal canal), and pelvic pain. By focusing on pelvic health during pregnancy, we can help you prevent or manage these issues, promoting a more comfortable and enjoyable pregnancy experience and postpartum recovery.
In the postpartum period, the pelvic floor muscles go through significant changes. They need time to recover and regain their strength and function. Addressing pelvic health during this time is crucial for optimal healing, preventing long-term complications, and promoting a smooth transition into motherhood. We can help guide you through exercises and techniques to strengthen and restore your pelvic floor, reducing the risk of urinary and fecal incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse, and other postpartum issues.
Beyond pregnancy and postpartum, pelvic health remains important throughout your lifespan. The pelvic floor muscles continue to provide support to your pelvic organs and contribute to core and pelvis/ hip stability. They also play a role in sexual function and pleasure. By maintaining a strong and healthy pelvic floor, you can reduce the risk of pelvic health issues (the ones mentioned above) that may arise as you age.
In summary, your pelvic health is important during pregnancy, postpartum, and throughout your lifespan because the pelvic floor muscles are responsible for supporting your pelvic organs, maintaining continence, providing core and pelvic/hip stability, and contributing to sexual function. By prioritizing pelvic health, you can improve your overall well-being, prevent complications, and enjoy a better quality of life.
If you have any questions or concerns about your pelvic health, we are here to provide guidance, support, and specialized care. Your pelvic health matters, and we are dedicated to helping you navigate this journey with confidence and optimal outcomes.
Sincerely,
Moms, Wives, PTs
Chryston & NaPortia
